We had our wonderful family reunion this weekend in Louisiana. My aunt and uncle have a fabulous place in the country. It is so unbelievably quiet, relaxing, and beautiful and the weather was wonderful. It didn't really get hot until Sunday afternoon.
My kids enjoyed riding a horse, swimming, playing in a playhouse, and searching for arrowheads (that may or may not have been prearranged for them to find). I'm pretty sure they were prearranged, 'cause what are the odds that the 3 children looking for arrowheads would stumble upon exactly 3 arrowheads?!?
I enjoyed visiting with my cousins and their families - it was a great time to catch up and discover that although we live very different lives, we have lots in common! The same basic values that have been passed down to us from our parents. Good times!
And now, I'll share a fun little video with you that has nothing to do with our trip, but is funny nonetheless:
I'm a child of God, a wife of 15 years to my college sweetheart, mom to 2 beautiful children thru open adoption, teacher of youth girls, interior designer, bunco player, card maker, minister's wife! Life is good!

Bury me in the backyard
N's birth great-uncle passed away this week. Tonight we are going to the funeral home and tomorrow Lance and I will be going to the funeral.
N has lost other members of his birth-family but we haven't lost any of our family since he was 6 months old, so I thought a conversation about death would be a good one to have. A simple explanation and a reminder that some of the people he loves the most (birth grandparents) would be very sad. I let him know that we could give them a hug and tell them we were sorry and just act calm and quiet. I wanted him to know this is not an occasion for silliness. So, when we finished with that brief, conversation, he said....
"Why don't they just bury him in their backyard?" I told him that that wouldn't work because if they sold their house and moved, other people wouldn't want someone else's family member buried in the backyard. At which point, he said, "Well, they could just dig him up and put his skeleton back together, move him to the new house and bury him again." Wow, 7 y.o.s definitely have an interesting perspective.
N also wanted to know who the oldest person in our family was because he wanted to know who would die next. I explained that it's not necessarily the oldest person who dies first. He thought for a minute and said well, I think Grandpa is the oldest because Nana is only 10. What?!? I explained that actually Grandma Stone and Granny were the oldest and then Grandad, Nana, Grandpa, and Grandmommy. But I couldn't convince him that Nana is not 10. So, there you have it. A nana who is only 3 years older than her grandson!
A little later he brought up the subject again and we talked about how Mrs. Ruby (his birth-great-grandmother) would probably be very sad because her son died. And N's response....I'll just climb up in her lap and cuddle with her. He's so sweet and of course, we won't really let that happen, because HELLO, she is turning 86 years old in February!
But, I'm so glad he wants to love on her. She is always loving on us as is the rest of his birthfamily. We are truly so blessed to have them in our lives. They not only love N, they love Lance, L, and me too! They never forget a birthday or Christmas and they always include us in their family celebrations and losses. And that's what family is all about. So, today we mourn the passing of Grammy's brother. He was a father of 3 and grandfather of 6 - today his family is hurting and we will join together to love on them.

A Full House and A Full Heart
Today has been a wonderful day of family and food. We've had 12 people in the house and 6 of those are 7 and under. It's been a day of excitement, squealing, and running! It's been a day of cousins loving on each other and grownups laughing along! It's been a great day that makes me thankful for my family.
I hope that you and yours have had a fantabulous day and one in which you were able to count each blessing!
We also had one special visitor...the tooth fairy came again last night after N lost his 2nd tooth while eating dinner - that's definitely something to be thankful for!
Tomorrow, we'll enjoy more time together and find more adventures to enjoy together (and we won't be joining the shopping madness!!) - Saturday, we hope to get our Christmas tree up and decorated!
This time of year is wonderful and so full of great traditions!

A different week
This week was unusual for us. Lance took the entire week off. It was great! He was home every evening and we got LOTS of family time. It's made a big difference for the kiddos - especially L. She has had lots of Daddy time and I think it's done her a world of good. She is usually glued to me, but this week, she got to:
have Daddy take her to dance class - which he LOVED! This is a highlight of our week!
wrestle with Daddy and Bubba!
Have Daddy change her sheets in the middle of the night when she had an "accident"
Play "Trouble" and "Clue Jr"
Bubba too has benefitted from Daddy's vacay - except for Monday, Lance has picked him up from school each afternoon
They've worked on homework, painted N's room and rearranged the furniture - hoping to have pics up next week - but ya know, it could be 2 weeks or 25.
Lance is also planting some new crepe myrtles in our yard ---love these weeks of accomplishment!
And me, yes, having a husband around has been nice - tonight we even get to have date night!!! It's been months since our last one, so excitement abounds. Although I have to say, there are really no movies I want to see right now. Why does that always happen? When we can't go out, there are tons of movies? But tonight, not so much, so I think we'll probably see the new James Bond. Not even sure of the name, but Lance will enjoy it, so there ya go!
And to top it all off, he also has Sunday off!!! So, we are headed to San Antonio after the soccer game on Saturday. I'll write more next week about our adventures in SA - we have something special planned for Sunday afternoon!
Hope you all have a great weekend!

This just in....
Evidently, we, in our house, are trying to set a world record for continous # of weekends in a row with illness or injury. I'm so grateful that these are not serious illnesses or injuries - nothing life threatening - just annoying!
Today, I got a call from the nurse at 1pm letting me know N had a fever of almost 102 - it has since spiked to over 102. The boy: he is still.and.quiet. Yes, he is a sick one alright, no doubt about it.
So, for weekend #5 out of the last 6, you will find me at the casa. Watching cartoons. Foldin' laundry. Bloggin'.
Lance's parents are scheduled to arrive tonight. Don't know if that will happen now or not. They (and everyone else) may want to stay away from the germ infestation that must be camped out here!
A few minutes ago, N said, "Do you know what I will wish for when I see my first shooting star?" "That germie germs would go away."
I would have to agree.
Here's hoping we don't make it into the world record books or at least not for this. We should get in for something cool, like the world's biggest lint ball or the world's biggest sidewalk chalk drawing. Ya' know something really important.
The end.

Pics up ahead!
We had a fun weekend. My parents were here for a visit and it was a great, relaxing time.
We played sidewalk chalk, paint, etc. We read books, went to a soccer game, and just enjoyed sometime of grandparent spoiling. Nana brought her famous pumpkin bread which has been almost completely eaten!
One of the highlights of the weekend was watching L loving on her grandpa. She is a grandpa's girl thru and thru---in the bath last night, she even said, "Grandpa is silly and Nana is nice." This was a good statement to hear since she yelled and screamed at Nana quite a bit over the weekend. Nana does still reign supreme with the boy though - N has been her boy since birth!
Now, for some pics from a couple of weekends ago at our community fall festival:
This one is one of my favorites. N LOVES to pull friends in our wagon and here he is pulling his sister. I love his willingness to help and love on his sister (at least every once in a while!) Also, take note of the lovely mum I won. This is the second plant I've won at our community parties (and only the 2nd one we've attended!)

In case you thought N had outgrown his train obsession:

And my gal, this is what she loved: Pure adventure!

We are so thankful to live in a community that does these fun events. We enjoy seeing our kids enjoy riding a pony and doing the petting zoo. But, the most fun part is seeing our friends and neighbors and having the opportunity to visit and have community with them.
Hope you and yours had a great weekend as well.

Surprise, Surprise!
We had a very nice surprise yesterday! Our nephew (who is 16!) came to town with a friend of his. His friend's brother is going to college here and they were here helping to move him into his apartment. We got to take our nephew out for ice cream last night and it was great! The kiddos thought it was especially awesome as it was 9pm!!! My children don't often get to be outside when it's dark.
This is the first time Jordan has been able to join our family without his parents, grandparents, or little sister. Jordan was his own man. We didn't get to visit nearly long enough, but it was nice and I think a taste of things to come. I'm excited about the opportunity to know him and Taylor as adults. The relationship will change, but there is nothing like being an aunt (or grandparent, so I've heard) to get to love on someone without having to discipline, etc.
Jordan is a delight to our family. He loves on our kiddos and is a great "big" cousin. He even put LeeLee in her carseat last night and was able to buckle her in, thankyouverymuch! Any of you who have tried our car seat puzzle before know this is quite the accomplishment!
Jordan, thanks for hanging out with your old aunt and uncle and loving on your cousins! We love you!

Fantabulous Fourth!
We've had lots of fun the last few days!
It all started Thursday with the dentist visit for the kiddos. I was very nervous about how L would do, but I was worried for nothing. The dentist said she was a little sweetheart - I was so proud of her!! N did great too, but he's an old pro!!
The kids and I headed to Plano for a few days of relaxation with Nana and Gpa. L experienced another first - fireworks! After crying to go home most of the evening (hey, it's hard for a 3 y.o. to wait for 9:30 fireworks!) she LOVED it once they started. She wanted to do it again as soon as they were over. She kept telling me that she wasn't scared at all. N made lots of new friends during the fireworks and had fun capturing grasshoppers and scaring Nana and I with them!
Saturday, mom and I went to the Southern Living House in Ft. Worth while Gpa and the kids went to the National Cowgirl Museum. It was a good day.
Sunday, I got the chance to catch up with Mary my high school friend whom I haven't seen in too many years! It was great to catch up and the time flew by! Now, we only have to figure out a way to get Kathryn to Texas!
Last night Lance made it home after 10 days away - the kiddos and I were very happy to see him home safe and sound!
Great weekend - hope yours was good as well!!

Day #7 - The fam is home!
My family came home yesterday and I was so glad to see them!!!
We had a wonderful day yesterday and I didn't make it to my blog. Today has been another good day and between a baby shower and friends being over, I'm just now getting to my blog today. So.....this will be the last post to comment on and you have until noon on Monday to post. I will do the drawing then and post tomorrow afternoon on who will win the gas card.
Some of you have shown yourselves and commented and I appreciate that. Some of you continue to stalk and that's okay too - some of you have told me personally and that will have to be good enough!
Hope you all had a great weekend!!

Day #5
Today is Day #5 of my contest - we're almost done peeps! See Monday's post for details.
This has been a great week! I've accomplished LOTS around my house that would have taken me months to do with the fam here. I've watched some "chick flicks" and enjoyed time with friends. It's been relaxing, in a productive sort of way!
But....I'm very anxious for my family to get home. I talked to Lance last night and told him "no dallying around, get that car home fast!" I'm glad I had this week to myself, but it may be several years before I do this again - we'll have to see!
Lance called from Super Summer to talk to the kids Weds morning and according to my mom, L said, "I talked to my daddy and now bubba is talking to his daddy and we have the same daddy" - pretty profound from a 3 y.o. She also said, "Daddy's coming to take us to Momma" - like Daddy is nothing more than the chauffeur!!! :)
Tonight is Michael W. Smith and I'm very excited - I love his music and concerts are not something I'm able to do much when hanging out with the 8pm bedtime crowd!
Enjoy your weekend everyone!!

Day #3 of Fill 'Er Up
Today is Day #3 of my contest. See my post from Monday for the details. Just a reminder, you get another chance to win for every comment you make. So, if you only comment one day, you only get one chance to win!
I finally put a counter and a live feed on my blog and it was interesting to see yesterday that I either have readers from the northeast or else they accidently stumbled onto my blog - which we all know is very easy to do. This blog thing is highly addictive!
This is the week Lance is gone to Super Summer and the kids are staying with their grandparents. I'm home alone! Monday night I was able to clean both of my kiddos' rooms from top to bottom, including closets - they look great! I was able to clean out broken toys, clothes that don't fit anymore, etc - I love the feeling!
Last night, was my Bunco group. We were in the country last night and it was nice. I'm a city gal, through and through, but I have to admit, the sunset was gorgeous, the air was cooler, and I love the sounds at night in the country.
Tonight, my plans are to tackle our room and closet but with strict orders not to touch Lance's stuff. See he doesn't like it when I throw his stuff away. I'm a purger, he's a hoarder - it can be a dangerous combination at times!!
Thursday night, I'll work on the kitchen and then try to dust and vacuum the entire house.
Friday night will be a fun night. One of my Bunco pals, Emily, invited me to go to a Michael W. Smith concert with her in Houston. She said it's free, so I'm in! If any of you gals in the College Station/Houston area are interested in going with us, you are definitely invited, just let me know!
I miss my family, but I'm enjoying the time I have and trying to make the most of it. I want to be ready to play and love on them when they get home!

Adoption
My friend Becky recently wrote a beautiful post on adoption and while my story is different from hers, alot of what she said is common in adoptive families. Click here to link to her beautifully written post.
Both of my kids have a unique story of how they joined our family. Both incredibly different from one another and yet God ordained the steps of their birthfamilies to bring them to be in our family. We are so thankful for the sacrifice and love that both Erin and Andrea showed. They helped to form our family and we are forever grateful.
N continues to enjoy a rich heritage with his birthmom and her family - they have included him in all the meaningful family events - he is truly a part of them and of us - we have celebrated high school graduations and weddings, we have mourned with them as they lost dear loved ones. He is blessed to have so many in his life that love him! N does not have contact with his birthfather, but we are hopeful that one day that will change.
L has the blessing of an older sister, Rachel - 11 y.o. who adores her. I always wanted a sister and I'm so thankful L will have one, even if she does grow up in a different home than ours. L doesn't have contact with either of her birthparents, but we pray one day that will change as well. Even though they are not able to be in L's life right now, we are thankful that they gave life to L.
Adoption is not a subject we discuss everyday in our house. We don't sit down and have "adoption" talks. It's more of a way of life for us. This morning while we were getting ready, N came in and said, "when you born me momma..." I gently reminded him that I didn't "born him" and without missing a beat, he said "that's right, when Erin born me..." As much as a 6 year old can understand, he does. I'm sure things will get more tricky as the kids get older and especially in the teenage years, but hopefully, they will always know they are loved.

A very FULL weekend!
It seems the last few weekends have been incredibly busy around our place - we had lots of company and lots of end-of-school year activities.
This weekend started with a wonderful occasion at N's school - Mommy Makeover!
N was incredibly enthusiastic about this - he got to apply makeup, give me a massage, and brush my hair. He embraced this with his usual enthusiasm for life and I was one of the "most beautiful" moms there! As part of the occasion, the kids each wrote and illustrated a story for us to read while we were getting pampered. It was a great time with N.
Saturday, L and I had our first momma/daughter pedicures. L was great! I was a little concerned about her patience and ability to sit still at 3 y.o. but she did great and loved every minute of it! She is very proud of her sparkly toes and I think we will make this an "annual" event for us.
Lance's parents, sister, and niece, and nephew also came to spend the day with us on Saturday. They went to N's soccer game with us which was fun. We also had the company of our friend, Alex - she's a soccer guru! L's crazy bike riding ability wore Jordan (15 y.o. nephew) out. He's her favorite cousin because he plays with her and does crazy stuff with her! Jordan wants to come to school at TAMU and we hope he will be able to.
Today, I got to do some of my favorite things and my kiddos and hubby came along and enjoyed it with me! We went on a home tour (which I absolutely love to do!), went for a bike ride, and went to get ice cream.
It was a great weekend and a time to celebrate the gift of motherhood. I'm so thankful that God blessed me with a great mom that raised me well and continues to be my greatest support and friend.
I'm also grateful that God allowed me to be a mom to N and L. On this day of motherhood, I'm also reminded of N and L's birthmoms and the great and selfless gift they gave to Lance and I.
Today I also remember my friends who are waiting to be moms and are longing for the day they will get to experience this joy. I remember those hard, lonely days and I pray that the time will go quickly for those of you who are stuck in the "waiting".
Happy Mother's Day!
Weekend Update!
We had a fantabulous weekend! It all started Thursday afternoon when my parents arrived for a visit! We decided to take them to the local hibachi grill for a fun family dinner! Little did we know, that little L would be terrified - she started crying and soon even N was fearful. I mistakenly thought they would love it! Maybe in a few years!
Friday, we had N's end of the year school music program. It was a 50's theme and super cute. N was dressed in his plain white T with his rolled up jeans. He did a good job singing and doing motions. The only problem - it was hard to see him - lots and lots of kids, teachers, and parents in the way!
Saturday was soccer day. It was extremely cold and windy and we had the 8:30 game, so we were all huddled together in our coats. Our friend, Miss Amy came and watched along with Nana and Grandpa.
Nana and Gpa headed back to the big D after lunch and later that afternoon, Miss Amy came over - we spent a wonderful weekend of going to the park, riding bikes, and just hanging out! After she left Sunday afternoon, it was time for the children's choir program at church. N did very well with his songs and even bowed after each one as the congregation clapped! It was cute.
I love weekends like this - it was so enjoyable with our company. N and L LOVE having people come stay with us and I'm so thankful that they do enjoy it! Guests are always welcome at the Mayes Hotel!

Happy Birthday Elizabeth!
Today is a "shout out" to my niece Elizabeth. She is 6 today - she is exactly 6 months to the day younger than N. And they were born in the same hospital - how crazy is that considering we live 4 hours apart and N was adopted? - I think it's super cool!
Elizabeth is a big sister. She has 2 little sisters and 1 little brother. She is very smart and excels greatly with her reading and math! N loves her and is very sad when we don't get to see them very often.
And most importantly of all, she has introduced my kids to the joy of playing......
PUPPY!

Elizabeth, I hope you have a great day!
Love, Aunt Jennie

In a Bloggers Slump....
Is there such a thing? I think so, for this week I seem to have hit it. This is one of those rare quiet weeks where things seem to be sailing along smoothly. It's one of those deep-breathing weeks!
Some highlights:
Soccer practice started again on Monday evening - we have a couple of new players on our team and everyone is excited to get going again! Lance is coaching again with the assistance of Carlos - our first game is Saturday!
L continues to "dabble" at potty-training. She told us this week that she doesn't like our potties at home because they aren't the right size! We have the little portable plastic kid potty, but N said, "let's get her a little potty like she has at school and church!" Uh, no, we aren't going to have a built-in LITTLE potty at our house. To which he replied, "oh yes, when she outgrows it, then it'll be ready for the next baby!" I don't think he quite gets that L IS the LAST baby!!!
Tommorrow is little L's big 3yr check-up. She has been a petite gal since birth, always at the low-end of the charts (as opposed to her Bubba who is in the mid-to-high end) I feel like she has grown ALOT this year, so I'm curious to see where she ends up!
That's really about all for this week - pretty quiet for now! Stay tuned!

Weekend Recap
We had a fun, relaxing weekend with family and friends!
Friday we had Rachel, L's birthsister, with us for the day. It was a fun time. The kids played in L's room, we went out to eat lunch, and then spent the afternoon at the park. For the first time, N (big brother) was not included in the relationship. Rachel and L are beginning to develop their own special time. It's wonderful to see.
Saturday morning, we went to the egg hunt at our church. It was fun to see all the kiddos excited about hunting eggs and playing with their friends. Saturday afternoon, I took N to play glow-in-the-dark PutPut while Lance took L for some special daddy/daughter time. It was fun to have some one on one time with N - we got to have some more indepth conversations that usually occur when little sister is around!
Saturday afternoon, we met our adult SS class at the Nantucket lake for a time of fishing/picnicing. N has LOTS of fun fishing with Lance and the "Big Kids" - he is a good patient, fisherman, which really surprises me since his personality is usually so active! But this is something special that he and Lance enjoy doing together. I chased L around to make sure she didn't end up in the lake! We followed the "big girls" around and L tried to do what they were doing. It was fun to enjoy the time of fellowship with other families from our church.
Today was a day of worship and Bible Study followed by lunch out. Then Lance and I took the kids to see "Horton Hears a Who". After the movie, Lance and N headed out to our Castlegate lake for more fishing!
All in all a great time of celebration of God's love and mercy on our lives.
This week, we are back to soccer practice for soccer season and on the road to the end of the school year!

Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday Mom!
Today is my mom's birthday! She is a woman I love and admire. My mom is one of the strongest women I've ever met. She has been thru alot in her life, but she stands strong and moves on. She has walked thru my dad's health issues over the years and has provided a great support system for him.
My mom chose to be home with my brother and I growing up. This was not an easy task, as my dad travelled alot and there wasn't much money. I know she must have done without alot and yet...she sacrificed for us.
She is still sacrificing for us. My mom is my go-to babysitter when my kids are sick and I need help. She is my advice-giver when I struggle with a decision. She will cancel her plans to meet the needs of her family. She is a lover of people and sometimes has to be the "tough love" that people need. This is a good thing!
My mom instilled in me (on purpose) to be an independent, strong woman. She didn't want me dependent on her and my dad or anyone else to make it thru life. She did a good job.
My mom is also my friend - we love to shop together, decorate, and sew (well, she sews, I buy the fabric!) I'm so thankful that God chose her to be my mom!
Mom is a "nana" to 6 wonderful grandkids whom she would do anything for. She always has all the kids favorite foods and special dietary restrictions covered when we visit. She does crafts and projects and makes her home a welcoming place for all.
We all love her.
Have a great day Mom!
Love,
Jen

Happy Birthday!
Today is the birthday of Lance's maternal Grandma - affectionately known as "Grandma Stone". She is 83 today and is one of the youngest 83 yr olds I know. She has babysat almost all of her great grandkids from birth. She gardens, is active in her church's senior citizen group, and loves "gospel singins". She along with Lance's granny have filled a special role in my life. My grandfathers both passed on before I could know them. My maternal grandmother had mental health issues and couldn't sustain a relationship with us. My paternal grandmother was a good woman and loved me immensely, but she died when I was 16. I have adopted Grandma Stone and Granny as my own. I'm grateful to have them in my life. They provide humor and love and enrich our lives so. Grandma Stone is a ruthless game player and will challenge anyone. She is spunky and feisty and I love to visit with her.
Have a great day Grandma Stone - I love you!

Wow - That took forever!
Okay, so here we are 6 months later! Hopefully, I will post more frequently than this or no one will ever read!
Since my initial post, my son has fallen in love with kindergarten! He has so much excitement each day and is reading sweet little books! It has been so thrilling to walk with him on this journey and see the world thru a 6 year olds life! He has learned to ride a bike without training wheels, suffered his first "bullying" experience, had his first concussion and achieved perfect attendance until this week! He has also been a ring bearer in a wedding for the 2nd time! Just a few weeks ago, he was delighted to be a part of his b-mom's wedding and it was a great experience for us all. Life is good for N.
L, our 2 yr old, will be 3 in little over a month. She too has had new experiences since my last post! She has had pneumonia, suffered thru terrible 2s (or should I say, we've suffered thru them!), and has moved to a BIG GIRL BED! I have no more babies! She got a small bicycle with training wheels for Christmas and is finally starting to figure it out! She is a ball of energy and definitely keeps me on my toes!
Lance (husband) is gearing up for his busy season at work. As a youth minister, the spring, SUMMER, and fall are the busy times - winter is slower! I've enjoyed having him around more lately, but know those days are numbered....he is planning a spring break trip to Lasara (South Texas) to minister to the least of these. This has been a trip he's been a part of for the last 5 years and is a true blessing to him and the lives of our students.
Next time I post, it shall be shorter!!!
