Pics up ahead!
We had a fun weekend. My parents were here for a visit and it was a great, relaxing time.
We played sidewalk chalk, paint, etc. We read books, went to a soccer game, and just enjoyed sometime of grandparent spoiling. Nana brought her famous pumpkin bread which has been almost completely eaten!
One of the highlights of the weekend was watching L loving on her grandpa. She is a grandpa's girl thru and thru---in the bath last night, she even said, "Grandpa is silly and Nana is nice." This was a good statement to hear since she yelled and screamed at Nana quite a bit over the weekend. Nana does still reign supreme with the boy though - N has been her boy since birth!

This one is one of my favorites. N LOVES to pull friends in our wagon and here he is pulling his sister. I love his willingness to help and love on his sister (at least every once in a while!) Also, take note of the lovely mum I won. This is the second plant I've won at our community parties (and only the 2nd one we've attended!)

We are so thankful to live in a community that does these fun events. We enjoy seeing our kids enjoy riding a pony and doing the petting zoo. But, the most fun part is seeing our friends and neighbors and having the opportunity to visit and have community with them.

The timing was off, but it was fun nonetheless!
Wednesday afternoon after school, N and I were working on homework and he asked for a snack. He picked Jello - soft and yummy! While he got started on his snack, I went into my room. I hear a little voice, screaming, "Mommy, Mommy" I go running and this is what I see:
We knew it wasn't going to wait until his birthday, but never did I think it would happen while eating Jello!
N wrote a letter to the tooth fairy. Inside, it said, "Dear tooth fairy, Please bring me 2 toys. Love, N*******!!! (Exclamation points are his) I'm not sure where he got the idea that you can request things from the tooth fairy!
This is what was waiting for him Thursday morning: a gold dollar coin and a letter back from the Tooth Fairy reminding him to brush, floss, and rinse his teeth everyday and letting him know that his baby tooth would be well taken care of.
This was a VERY exciting moment in this house. Those of you who've already been thru this stage probably experienced something similiar. Those of you who still have this in your future, look forward to it! fun, fun, fun! It was like Christmas morning!

Dancing,dancing, and more dancing!
I love to dance! Lance and I danced several times a week when we were first dating - we loved it! At that time, Baylor still didn't allow dancing on campus, and so we had to go to bars to dance. They have since wised up and now allow dancing on campus.We didn't get to have dancing at our wedding reception, we married about 2-3 years early for this to be in vogue or acceptable for a young Baptist couple. No, instead, we had the traditional 2pm wedding with punch and cake - short and sweet!
My brother, Paul, and his bride, Mindy had dancing at their wedding and it was fun! Someday, Lance and I will have to renew our vows and have DANCING!
We've had an annual Christmas Ball the last 5 years for our youth at church and it's been fun - the kids come with or without dates and we rotate partners all evening - it's great and no one is self conscious.
Well, Sunday night at church, we had a square dance for everybody - it was multi-generational. The 3 y.o.'s were really the youngest that were participating (sort of) but it went up to those in their 70's. It was so much fun! I loved watching all skill levels, all generations enjoying the fun of dancing. It's unbelievable that for years, Baptist were against dancing ---boy, they were really missing out! We had some professional callers and they had us trying all different kinds of things and they even had a few dances just for kiddos. So fun, so sweet!
Today, little L starts her dance class and she is so excited - she has been dancing everywhere lately....in her chair at the dinner table, in the bathtub...oh the joy of dance!

Routine, my old friend
After a fantabulous summer o'fun, I'm finally ready to get back in the regular fall schedule.
Summer, you were good to us, but we believe the fall will be too!
Top ten things I'm looking forward to this fall:
#10 - Getting to know the new 7th graders in our youth ministry
#9 - listening to the high school marching band at the Friday night games
#8 - buying new clothes that have long sleeves, full length pants, and closed toe shoes! of course, where we live we can only wear these between Dec 1 and March 1!
#7 - start Christmas shopping/Thanksgiving menu planning
#6 - make my own Christmas cards!
#5 - N's 7th birthday and Halloween all in one week!
#4 - trip with friends to Canton!
#3 - Dance classes with L - can't wait to do all the girly stuff!
#2 - Soccer with N and his friends
#1 - Lance's 40th!!! Birthday!!! How in the world am I old enough to be married to a 40 year old. I was only 18 when we started dating!! Of course, he is much older than me - hehe!

Sleepover
Well, we've done it. We've caved in to months of pressure from the boy. He has worn us down. We are letting him have a friend spend the night Friday night for the 1st time.
It happens to be our next-door neighbor's youngest son. We did this on purpose. If it doesn't work out, it's easy to walk him back home! We told N this is a test to see how he handles all the overwhelming excitement that is sure to descend on our house Friday night. If he handles it with all the maturity of a 6 1/2 year old, then maybe, just maybe we'll let him do it again before he graduates from high school!!!
Just kidding, we know we'll let him again, but the frequency will depend on his behavior.
I've sought advice on this subject for about a year now and have received a wide variety of responses. Some parents refuse to ever allow sleepovers for their children. Some only allow their child to invite a friend over to their house for a sleepover and yet others don't mind sleepovers at all. I think I'm a middle of the road kinda gal. I want sleepovers to be a special treat, not a weekly occurence. I also will carefully monitor whose home my kiddos will be allowed to spend the night in. So many issues have come up that I never really thought of before: guns (do they have them in the house? and if so, are they locked up?); what kind of movies/TV they allow their children to watch?, etc.
I want my kids to experience life and not grow up completely sheltered and naive about the world, but I also want to do everything in my power to protect them as well.
Any advice out there from any of you more experienced parents?!?

a little fun!
Christine has a funny video on her blog today. I wish I knew how to get this on my blog, but truly, you know, I struggle on the technology front.
I've got to be the only 36 y.o. on the planet who doesn't know how to download pics from my digital camera, text, or program a PDA.
My skills at the moment are limited to corralling my kiddos while doing laundry, heating up dinner, and listening to Lance at the same time!
Plus, why learn the technology we have now, when in a few months I'll only have to "think" and these things will "just happen" - yes, I'm waiting for that day!

Fantabulous Fourth!
We've had lots of fun the last few days!
It all started Thursday with the dentist visit for the kiddos. I was very nervous about how L would do, but I was worried for nothing. The dentist said she was a little sweetheart - I was so proud of her!! N did great too, but he's an old pro!!
The kids and I headed to Plano for a few days of relaxation with Nana and Gpa. L experienced another first - fireworks! After crying to go home most of the evening (hey, it's hard for a 3 y.o. to wait for 9:30 fireworks!) she LOVED it once they started. She wanted to do it again as soon as they were over. She kept telling me that she wasn't scared at all. N made lots of new friends during the fireworks and had fun capturing grasshoppers and scaring Nana and I with them!
Saturday, mom and I went to the Southern Living House in Ft. Worth while Gpa and the kids went to the National Cowgirl Museum. It was a good day.
Sunday, I got the chance to catch up with Mary my high school friend whom I haven't seen in too many years! It was great to catch up and the time flew by! Now, we only have to figure out a way to get Kathryn to Texas!
Last night Lance made it home after 10 days away - the kiddos and I were very happy to see him home safe and sound!

Day #3 of Fill 'Er Up

I finally put a counter and a live feed on my blog and it was interesting to see yesterday that I either have readers from the northeast or else they accidently stumbled onto my blog - which we all know is very easy to do. This blog thing is highly addictive!
This is the week Lance is gone to Super Summer and the kids are staying with their grandparents. I'm home alone! Monday night I was able to clean both of my kiddos' rooms from top to bottom, including closets - they look great! I was able to clean out broken toys, clothes that don't fit anymore, etc - I love the feeling!
Last night, was my Bunco group. We were in the country last night and it was nice. I'm a city gal, through and through, but I have to admit, the sunset was gorgeous, the air was cooler, and I love the sounds at night in the country.
Tonight, my plans are to tackle our room and closet but with strict orders not to touch Lance's stuff. See he doesn't like it when I throw his stuff away. I'm a purger, he's a hoarder - it can be a dangerous combination at times!!
Thursday night, I'll work on the kitchen and then try to dust and vacuum the entire house.
Friday night will be a fun night. One of my Bunco pals, Emily, invited me to go to a Michael W. Smith concert with her in Houston. She said it's free, so I'm in! If any of you gals in the College Station/Houston area are interested in going with us, you are definitely invited, just let me know!
I miss my family, but I'm enjoying the time I have and trying to make the most of it. I want to be ready to play and love on them when they get home!

Day #2 of Bloggy Contest and another HB!
Today is day #2 of my contest designed to "flush" out some of you stalkers. See yesterday's post for details of my $50 gas card giveaway!

Today's regularly scheduled blog is dedicated to my oldest niece, Taylor. She is turning 13 today - awesome! I still remember the phone call telling us she had been born -Lance was at youth camp (imagine that!) and we were excited to know that Jordan would have a little sister!
This is Taylor, her older brother Jordan, and my kids N and L - this picture was taken last year at our adoption agency's annual spring picnic.
Taylor is a good "big" cousin to my kiddos - she reads to them and plays with them and only gets slightly annoyed with them sometimes. Hey, she is 13 after all!

Holiday Weekend
We had a great weekend! What a great kick-off to summer!
Saturday, we were able to enjoy free tickets to High School Musical 2 on Ice! We were given 200 free tickets to share with our church, friends, and neighbors! It was fun and N invited 3 friends to go with us. It was fun to listen to them talk, sing, and laugh in the car. L got a big kick out of them as well - she loves to watch her brother and his friends!
Sunday was a day of celebration with our graduating seniors. It's very emotional each year to see them and their parents celebrating the end of their childhood. We've know these students since they were in 5th grade - they've changed ALOT!
Sunday evening we fellowshipped with our church family over homemade ice cream and pie - that was a fun time as well.
Yesterday, my family took me to The Woodlands for an early birthday treat at The Cheesecake Factory. It was delicious and we had a relaxing day shopping and playing. We came home and went swimming before settling in for the evening. Great times, great memories, very relaxing!
Now, we are in the last week of school - it's hard to believe N has almost finished kindergarten and he is even a little sad about it. He has LOVED his teacher this year.

A new obsession!
We're all about the bike riding at our house these days. Yesterday, N and I went for a bike ride after school - just the two of us. He showed me some cool new 6 y.o. moves - the razor turn, the downhill speed turn, and the wiggly turn. It was fun - we got to ride fast - super fast! We enjoyed our conversation along the way too!
Last night, L and I went on a bike ride together - she's all about speed most of the time, except when she stops to ask, "is that a flower, momma?"; "is that a puppy, momma?" now these are all rhetorical questions as she already knows what these things are. It's more about the experience of sharing things together.
I love these times with my kiddos and I have enjoyed the individual time with each of them without any bickering, etc. Each got to set their own pace and agenda. It was nice. I love seeing the things that each of them is interested in. I love seeing the world thru their eyes.
Tonight, we'll all 4 ride together and that will be fun too - just different! The boys will probably race on ahead of L and I while we smell flowers and pet puppy dogs along the way!
I'm working on getting L signed up for dance classes with my friend Tracy's daughter, Emma. I hope she loves dancing as much as the bike riding!
I think L is our little athlete - she loves "playing" soccer and basketball and she is actually better at catching a ball than N - she loves getting dirty and living it up!
N is more of the social, creative, kind of guy - give him some one to talk to and play with and he'll make up a game or activity - like ant collecting or tying things to his scooter to make it into a train. Sports, not so much for him!
I'm so thankful that God makes us all different. For years, I would compare myself to others and only notice the things they could do that I couldn't. Being a mom, I'd like to think I'm better able to appreciate the differences and how they are all wonderful and how they make us just the way God designed us to be.

Weekend Update!
We had a fantabulous weekend! It all started Thursday afternoon when my parents arrived for a visit! We decided to take them to the local hibachi grill for a fun family dinner! Little did we know, that little L would be terrified - she started crying and soon even N was fearful. I mistakenly thought they would love it! Maybe in a few years!
Friday, we had N's end of the year school music program. It was a 50's theme and super cute. N was dressed in his plain white T with his rolled up jeans. He did a good job singing and doing motions. The only problem - it was hard to see him - lots and lots of kids, teachers, and parents in the way!
Saturday was soccer day. It was extremely cold and windy and we had the 8:30 game, so we were all huddled together in our coats. Our friend, Miss Amy came and watched along with Nana and Grandpa.
Nana and Gpa headed back to the big D after lunch and later that afternoon, Miss Amy came over - we spent a wonderful weekend of going to the park, riding bikes, and just hanging out! After she left Sunday afternoon, it was time for the children's choir program at church. N did very well with his songs and even bowed after each one as the congregation clapped! It was cute.
I love weekends like this - it was so enjoyable with our company. N and L LOVE having people come stay with us and I'm so thankful that they do enjoy it! Guests are always welcome at the Mayes Hotel!

Saturday was soccer day. It was extremely cold and windy and we had the 8:30 game, so we were all huddled together in our coats. Our friend, Miss Amy came and watched along with Nana and Grandpa.
Nana and Gpa headed back to the big D after lunch and later that afternoon, Miss Amy came over - we spent a wonderful weekend of going to the park, riding bikes, and just hanging out! After she left Sunday afternoon, it was time for the children's choir program at church. N did very well with his songs and even bowed after each one as the congregation clapped! It was cute.
I love weekends like this - it was so enjoyable with our company. N and L LOVE having people come stay with us and I'm so thankful that they do enjoy it! Guests are always welcome at the Mayes Hotel!

It's like riding a bike!
My gal, L, is a 3 y.o. bicycling dynamo. At barely 3 years old, she can bike all the way to the park and back - approx 1 1/2 miles.
The last few months it has been slow going - lots of breaks, etc. But, this weekend, she rode it and rode it FAST! I discovered that I can no longer walk the route with her and keep up. So, it's back to cycling I go.
It has been 9 years since I've ridden a bicycle. This afternoon I got on Lance's bike since he has been riding recently and his is in good shape. Other than the high bar, it was GREAT! It's true what they say, you never forget how to ride! I'm ready to have my bike reconditioned so I can ride again! I'm very excited about all 4 of us being able to go on family rides!

Life in a Box
Lance bought a new grill over the weekend. It's great - he cooked shrimp and pork chops for us Saturday night - delicious!
The grill came in a box - a GREAT BIG box!
This box sat on our back patio until Monday afternoon. Then, genius struck! N and his friend Aaron transformed the box into....a PLAYHOUSE! It's awesome - complete with a cut-out window, front door and a sign...a flip-sign at that - one side says..."Grand Opening of the Play Hose" and the other says, "Play Hose Closed" - spelling courtesy of N. The flip-sign is creatively attached to the box using one of my dangle earrings. Fortunately, I'd lost the mate to this earring, so it's found it's new destiny as play house sign holder!
The fun continued when L and Madeline and Brookelyn decided to "paint" the playhouse. Our version of painting is sidewalk chalk mixed with water. The house is now "decorated". Hours of fun have been had by our kids and the neighbors - love it!

Exercise update
So, since my post last week about the need to incorporate more exercise into my life, I've done the following....
Well, sort of....I've chased 2 children who were doing this to the park and back - 2.2 miles x 2 times last week!
I've played around on this....
With two kiddos - total of 5 hours during the week! And in case you are wondering....I am one of the "cool moms" who slides, swings, climbs with her kids on the playground - no bench sitting for me!
And walked thru these in Independence,TX (home of the original Baylor campus)....
with two kiddos for 1 1/2 hours! L's favorite part was the tire swing in the old tree. N's favorite part was the climbing in trees - the live oaks in Independence are awesomely huge. As soon as Lance gets the photos off our camera, I'll share! And L came up with a new song, "Old Baylor, Old Baylor, I love you" It was cute. Of course Lance and I would love to see our kids go to Baylor, but seeing as how tuition is now $40,000/yr it is EXTREMELY unlikely. Especially since they won't be going to college until 2020 and 2023.
And I also cleaned house (at warp speed) for 2 hours!
So, even though there was one day (Sunday) which I did not exercise, all in all, it was a pretty productive week. Yesterday, I began my playground/walking regime but L took a bad fall and skinned her knees and elbows - we had to quit early. She has been suffering terrible allergies the last few days and it doesn't take much to push her over the edge!
Tonight will be my night off from exercise since I have Bunco - yippee!!
Thanks for the encouraging posts and emails regarding my exercise goals. It's great to have friends who care and want the best for me! I know some of you don't like to post comments or haven't figured out how to yet (took me forever!) so thanks for taking the time to email!

It was like, my bestest day ever!
That's what I heard yesterday when I picked N up from school.
The reason for his bestest day ever.....his first field trip!
Since the "big kids" at his school were taking the TAKS test, the principal decided to evacuate the little ones for the day. So, my son and his classmates got to go to Oil Ranch about an hour from our town. Fortunately, Lance was able to take the time off and go as a sponser. He said the kids were really good and it was a neat place - somewhere we as a family would enjoy going.
The highlights of the trip according to N:
Riding on a school bus - "It's way taller than momma's truck and I got to sit by the window and Joseph and I played rock, paper, scissors all the way there"; "why can't I ride a school bus everyday?" (perhaps because the school is in our neighborhood?) :)
Feeding the cows their pills - Lance said they were some kind of feeding pellets and they actually did look like pills
Petting the chickens - that sounds interesting, I've never really thought of chickens as being pettable, but I guess they are!
What is very interesting is that my dear N who has absolutely been in love with trains almost from the moment of his birth, barely mentioned the train that was there. Lance told me more about it than N....I think it's a sign he's growing up...wah!
Now, tomorrow is the kindergarten trail ride to our local neighborhood park - they will have bounce houses, games, cookouts, etc....so what I'm waiting to hear is....."This was like my bestest day ever!" I'm so glad he has so many of those!

Date Night!
So....once you have kids, even going to dinner and a movie with your spouse becomes tricky! Not only do you have to have TIME to go out, but then you also have to have $$$$ for the dinner, movie and babysitter. We are 4 hours away from our family, so no free babysitters for us! And when we had 1 child, we didn't mind having friends watch him occasionally, but once you have multiple children, that doesn't seem so great! Fortunately, for us, we have a plethora of babysitters to select from College students and high school students are always willing and excited to come to our house! (We don't yet use middle school babysitters!) Maybe, once L is potty-trained.
But anyway...tonight is date night for Lance and I. This will be our valentine celebration. We don't dare go anywhere near a restaurant or movie on the real valentine's day as we live in a college town - everything will be PACKED. So, we will enjoy a nice quiet dinner with a real conversation and no one throwing food, hanging all over us, or throwing a temper tantrum - it will be great!
Then, we will go catch a show at our local theater, who believe it or not, actually lowered their prices this year - only $5 for a night-time movie!
We will enjoy our time together and then we will be just as excited to go home and see what our kiddos were up to this evening! Ain't life grand?
Enjoy some time with your spouse - budget $ for date nights out - it will do you good and it will be good for your kids to see that your mate is a priority. Plus, it will give you renewed energy for your children also!
